The Highlands of Ngorongoro is where the Empakai Crater found. This is a little green paradise with an alkaline Lake of about 85 m deep.

Empakai Crater is the green paradise found at Ngorongoro conservation Area Authority. From Empakai Crater rim you have a fantastic view in the craters’ green paradise. The crater has a width of about 6 km and almost half of its floor is covered by a lake. The depth of the lake is about 85m and its water is alkaline, unusually deep for soda lakes in East Africa. The steep walls of the crater, covered in forest, rise in some places to nearly 300m above its floor.
At every point Views along the trail downward to Empakai are remarkable. You can enjoy the altering views of Empakai itself along the rim . In addition from the northern and eastern side you can look out to the dramatic cone of the only active volcano in Tanzania the Oldonyo Lengai Mountain. In clear day you can view beyond Lengai Mountain up to the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron.
Down to Empakai Crater floor where the lake situated is home to some flamingos and other water birds, you may spot buffaloes, bush bucks, or even leopard, blue monkeys and various colorful bird species including sun bird, turaco hanging around the beautiful flowers and herbs. Waterbucks and elands are often seen at the shore of the lake. It is a joyful walking around the lake shore, feeling the calmness and quiet beauty of this wild paradise with an armed ranger to ensure safety. Empakai Crater offers the erratic sense of pure privacy and peace which only found in remote unspoiled areas.
